Letter and Email Writing Samples
We have gathered some writing samples to make it easier to engage with the school board on the subject of common sense, opt-in sexual health and relationship education. Feel free to use your own words. The more heartfelt the better! And remember that even though you might not get a response, your opinion is on record. Thank you for advocating for our students.

Subject: ANTI-BULLYING
Greetings,
*** Your own personal introduction (Are you a resident? Are you a parent/grandparent/guardian? Personal reason why this is important to you ***
When students learn sexual health and wellness education together, guided by a professional health teacher, some beautiful things happen: they become less likely to bully each other, they do better in their schoolwork, and they are more likely to help each other if someone is being bullied or abused.
I want to encourage this level of togetherness and respect in our Forest Hills Schools. I believe that the opt-in “abstinence plus” approach that Dr. Jason Simmons presented is an acceptable option for families with students in the district.

Some politicians out there are trying to gain power by hurting our kids. They don’t care about most parents or the well-being of our children. They’re after money from their supporters an political clout, so they’re trying to take away Black history for everyone, ban books, and stop schools from teaching about relationships and sexuality at all. They don’t even care that parents or guardians can already opt their children out of any or all sex education instruction in Ohio schools with a written request.
I believe that the opt-in “abstinence plus” approach that was presented at the April 2024 board meeting is an acceptable option for families with students in the district. Please do not be cowed by political forces. Do this for the majority of families who want this education.

Subject: BREAK THE ISOLATION

It’s no secret that too many young people right now are lonely and having a tough time. No matter what communities we’re a part of, I know we all want to support them. That’s why I believe in professional health instructors, teaching sexual health and wellness education in school — beyond Ohio’s abstinence only approach. It’s one of the best ways we have to help young people develop good, healthy relationships and connections with themselves and their peers.
I believe that the opt-in “abstinence plus” approach presented at the April 2024 board meeting is an acceptable option for families with students in the district. I know that the additional education will help students feel more connected to themselves and other students.

Certain politicians are trying to get and hold onto power by taking away our right to be free in our own bodies, and now they’re coming for our kids, too. We see this in how they are banning and restricting abortion and in their attacks on sexual health and wellness education in our schools.
I believe that the opt-in “abstinence plus” approach that Dr. Jason Simmons presented is an acceptable option for families with students in the district. Please do not be cowed by political forces. Do this for the majority of families who want this education and for their students to be able to make informed choices in the future.
